Hartford Public Schools ( Hps ) Implements Exclusionary...

Background Hartford Public Schools (HPS) implements exclusionary discipline practices such as out-of-school suspension and expulsion, with 43310 student school days lost to discipline in 2009-2010. This loss of school time fell disproportionately and excessively against Black students, especially males. In the 2009-2010 school year, 52.3 percent of Black students and 64.8 percent of Black males enrolled in K-12 schools in HPS faced suspension or expulsion at least once compared to only 16.3 percent for white students and 21 percent for white males. Several studies in varied contexts across the United States show that a higher frequency or more serious level of misbehavior by Black students cannot entirely explain the racial disparities†¦show more content†¦Studies have also found a correlation between exclusionary discipline and (1) increased school avoidance, (2) decreased academic engagement, (3) an increased rate of dropouts, (4) increased behavioral problems, and (5) increased involvement with the juvenile justice system. School administrators have the right to want to develop a safe climate for their students and teachers and remove threats from their schools. However, serious threats from students are rare. Nearly 60 percent of the suspensions and expulsions administered in HPS in 2009-2010 were administered for school policy violations—a category that includes things like insubordination, profanity, sleeping in class, and truancy—not serious safety concerns like violence against others or weapon s. Schools are more effective when students feel that they belong and can engage in the learning process. Schools are safer when teachers and administrators have strategies and training to prevent and manage conflicts and misbehavior. A policy to ensure that students are not unfairly at risk for suspension because of their race and have the equal educational opportunities to which they are entitled by federal law will prevent, recognize, and rectify the overuse and inequality of exclusionary discipline. Why I Write A Writing - 1513 Words

â€Å"Why I Write† Writing has never really been a passion I possess. I wouldn’t go as far to say I hate it, but, I wouldn’t want to say I love it either. For some, writing is a way to escape their own messed up worlds and creates a new, it’s exciting, adventures, and daring, but, to me, writing is such a tedious task that I as a person do not have the patience to withstand. I haven’t always disliked writing; I actually use to enjoy getting all my thoughts down on paper and coming out with my own little masterpiece my parents could hang on the fridge and boast about to their friends. The worst/best paper I ever had to write was in fifth grade; I had to describe my top three very best friends in five paragraphs or more, then let my elbow partner grade it on a scale from 1-6 ( six being the best.) I put my all into that paper; it was going to be my best paper yet. Getting organized to write a paper is the worst thing ever; the idea charts, the constant erasing, getting up repeatedly to sharpen my pencil. I remember writing this particular paper; I had just gotten to school and put my bag in my cubby hole. The first thing out of Mr. Leisch’s mouth (my teacher at the time) was, â€Å"today we are going to write for the entire day, we are falling behind in this subject compared to the other three classes and we need to practice.† As the rest of my peers groaned and bellyached I was thrilled, â€Å"today will be the day I write a six!† I told myself. Personal Development Rview Samples †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Personal Development Rview. Answer: Introduction Personal development is a process that an individual in a career aspires. On my perspective, I aimed to develop my own time management skills and also the communication skills. These two skills were paramount in my enhancement in the leadership skills and also the management skills. As such, I undertook various personal development activities to improve my own time management skills and the communication skills. The plan which I implemented included becoming the team leader of an innovative team thus it was very necessary to address the various issues which I saw can bring a grate change, to lead in the project schedule and motivate members through effective communication skills. This paper gives a detailed review of how I have developed the most important communication and time management skills. Review progress and outcomes of the personal development plan against the objectives set The implementation of my own personal development skills involved making most significant decisions such as allocation of the resources in most needy areas and dividing the tasks allocating them to different team members. Initially, due to the friendly behavior and close ties with some colleagues, some issues were raised. Some members felt that I was subjective and did not exercise fairness[1] to all members of the group. besides, I also noted that while dividing functions and works among various teams, I failed to account for the bulkiness of some various tasks I assigned to some members. However, my mentor indicated that when addressing each member in the team would not help resolve the conflict. I had to learn how to communicate and align the various groups and each individual goals. 3M1 Compare current personal leadership management strategies with the outcomes of the original audit During the implementation of the personal development plan, the two primary objectives were to be used improve communication skills and the team management skills. For the communication skills to be effective, the goal was to learn how to be eloquent among a large group of people. Rather than communicating with each person, which was my comfort zone, the goal was to address a large group of people and communicating effectively for them to understand everything. Besides, I had to enhance employee engagement[2]. Secondly, for time management, I had to improve on the performance by maintaining average speed in completing tasks on a personal and group level. As such, the review of my development was carried out by me, my mentor and the other team members. 3D1 Analyse areas for further development and update personal development plan On reviewing my progress on the personal development plan, I noticed that I had made a significant improvement in time management area, but communication skills were still lagging behind. I had to work hard so that I can see the improvement the communication skills which was my wish. I found that for the time management to improve, as the leader of the team, I had to call for a meeting of everybody and set deadlines on when each stage of the project should be completed. Therefore, I had to make sure that I arrived at the meeting on time which was very difficult to adhere. Though I started with often being late for the meeting, as the season progressed I began arriving on and before the scheduled time. Secondly, I improved on enhancing productivity by reducing the average time I required to complete routine tasks[3]. Also, as a leader of the group, I ensured that every project deadlines were met by regularly checking on the progress of each members responsibilities[4] to avoid latenes s. Though at first time the members found it difficult and they could not cooperate well, the team eventually learned that coordination helped to save mostly time and increase performance of the group. As such, my colleagues and the mentor gave positive remarks on my time management skills which i introduced to the groups. Conclusion For my communication skills, there was a significant gap between actual and desired results. First, as I am patient and friendlier, it became a challenge to establish the notion of leadership as everyone was equal[5]. It raised an issue as some group members did not respect the leadership position, thus if I needed to communicate something I did it in person. Secondly, due to the friendly relations developed in the group, communication regularly took place through the grapevine rather than formal channels[6]. As such, the remarks on my communication review noted that I had considerable room for improvement at once. I, therefore, developed a more precise plan with definite objectives. Rather than relying on informal channels to communicate, I should address the group as a whole. Besides, I will focus on playing a significant role in meetings to ensure that the leadership and every position is established through effective communication. Bibliography Amabile, Teresa, Colin M. A Day in the Life of My Mother free essay sample

Name: Zoey Tan Wei Lin (32) Class: 2 Endurance Date: 7 March 2011 A Day in the Life of My Mother A day in the life of my mother when she was my age was not easy. So a day in her teenager life starts like this. Early in the morning, about five thirty a. m. , I wake up and found a warm blanket on top of me. ‘Father had waked up and had covered me, again, in his warm blanket. ’ I thought. Anyway, I had to get up and help father in his humble little moveable cart that sell rojak, a mixtures of tropical fruits, such as pineapple and so on. So I got up, get dress and was ready. I got out of my room which I shared with four other siblings, my second sister, my younger sister, my second brother and my youngest brother. My mother had seven children, three sons and four daughters, however, my eldest sister had pass away when she was a baby. And my eldest brother slept in the living room while my mother and father slept in the other smaller room. My mother rent two rooms in this place near the Singapore River. When I got out I crept pass my grandmother’s bedroom. She is a scary woman, most of us do not like her as she only knows how to take money from father but she did not see how much effort mother and father put in order to support the family. However, when she does not get the money she wanted as the selling of rojak is not good, she will throw the freshly removed skin pineapple on the floor and make a scene. Does she not understand that by doing so, lesser people will want to buy the rojak and thus father could not earn enough to give her? And, of course, I gotten my revenge, I will throw the pineapple skin from other stall at her hair, which is neatly tie up as a bun. Then, I will hide behind one of the big, tall pillar without her noticing and she will start cursing about who naughty children that throw things at her. Little did she know that it was her granddaughter who throws it at her. I walked past my mother’s room, look in and found that she had already when to work. My mother is a pleasant lady that never raises her voice but she does punish us. As I had said, our family is not very wealthy so we could not just get anything we want and my only doll which is made of fragile plastic was being thrown onto the floor and thus, it was broken. It is also one of the reasons why I quit school, I simply cannot bear my mother going around borrowing money to pay for my school fees and to buy the materials needed for schooling. Furthermore, I had to helped my father sell rojak since my other siblings are either too young or does not even care. Thus, when I get home I was so tired! And it is already very late and I did not have time for studies. The lights have been switched off and I had to use an oil lamp but I still cannot see properly under the dim light. Anyway, it had been about four years now since I dropped out of school and my day since then had much like today expect that I had to walk down to Clarke Quark to buy opera tickets for my mother as this evening at the outdoor theatres hall will be showing her favorite show. However, sometimes I get to go home earlier but I will still have to helped my mother cooked rice. We used firewood or charcoal to cook and it will end up very watery than I had to scope the rice up and dry it to become like rice. Now I got out of the house and help father pushed the cart. Fortunately, today is a good day where there is no rain and the sun is not too hot. Thus, we managed to sell all the rojak early but it is still a tiring day as there are a lot of bridges that are very steep and, always, there are those few customer that are very difficult to please. We mainly sell along the Singapore River, it is dirty and smelly as ever. There are many many interesting things that happened daily. Today there was a shark corpse that was found by one of the fisherman and when they cut open the shark, they found a body inside. Today we get to earn a little extra more so dinner was also an extra special. We reach home and while father work inside the kitchen, I went out to play. We can play with many things and we could anything possible to something that amuses us. We also play with fire crackers. But nowadays I did not play so much, instead, I go to people’s park complex to look for either my aunt or my second sister. My second sister was working there as a tailor which I think I might soon join her as I could choose to be either a tailor or a hairdresser but I think i will choose to be a tailor instead of a hairdresser. Because I think it might suit me more. My aunt has a shop there, at the people’s park complex, selling beads, laces and other decorative materials used in sewing. So every night I will drop by there to help out and maybe my aunt will give one to five cents for me to buy sweets but I always save it up in a biscuit tin. Then, I will go home with my sister. And on the way home we will cross one bridge that is very dark and we will always run across it sometimes there noises on it we will scream saying there is a ghost. And when we finally reach home, I will be so tired and will go off to bed. So those were the fond memories my mother had when she was a young adult but her life was not that easy after all. However, she was strong enough and had braved through all difficulties. When I first asked her about her life her first was not good, very bad but her optimist kept her going on. My mother will always be my top number one idol!
